What Are The Symptoms of Tenosynovitis?
Certain tendons within the body are more susceptible to injury than others; namely those in the hands and wrists, feet and ankles. This is due to the increased work load that they carry out on a regular basis. Tendons within the shoulder, elbow and knee are also at risk, but are slightly less renowned for developing Tenosynovitis.
There is a variety of symptoms that can present when someone is suffering from Tenosynovitis, these include:
- Stiffness in the joints – as the tendon swells it makes movement more difficult and can lead to a feeling of stiffness within the affected area.
- Swelling of the joints – the swelling of the tendon can make the affected joint swell up as well, causing discomfort and restricting movement.
- Pain and tenderness in the joints – pain is one of the first indicators of Tenosynovitis, as the tendon’s movement is restricted and the gliding surfaces of the tendon and sheath become inflamed and roughened, the pain can remain localised or in some cases can appear to shoot up the arm or leg.
- Redness of the skin – with issues going on in the joint underneath the skin, it is quite common for the affected area to swell and the skin to redden.
- Clicking noises when moving – when the tendon is unable to move normally within its sheath it can sometimes make a clicking or creaking noise known as crepitation during movement.
- Fever – in some cases people suffering from Tenosynovitis can develop a fever; this is usually associated with an infection either of the area in question, possibly due to an injury that has caused the condition, or in some cases as a secondary infection of the injury.
In some cases these symptoms might present themselves for just a few days, but in others they may last for weeks, months or even years. With correct treatment however, many can be managed and eradicated quite swiftly.
These symptoms, while frequently associated with Tenosynovitis, can also be displayed by a range of other maladies, and so if you are suffering from any of the above it is probably worthwhile speaking to your doctor or health professional to make sure you can be treated for the correct affliction.
